I get child and working tax credits. Do I have to tell HMRC that I have been furloughed from work?

HMRC has said that there is no need to contact them for 8 weeks after you have been furloughed from work. You will continue to receive tax credits as normal. If after 8 weeks you are receiving 80% of your wages from the Job Retention Scheme you will still be treated as if you are working and receive tax credits. If you are not getting 80% of your wages and it is more than 8 weeks since you have been furloughed please call the tax credit helpline, 0345 300 3900, for information.

If your job ends you will no longer be entitled to working tax credit. Your child tax credit will continue but working tax credit will only be paid for a further 4 weeks. You can no longer make a claim for housing benefit if you were not already getting it but can claim New Sstyle Jobseeker’s Allowance and universal credit.
