What is further education?

Last updated: 10/02/2020

Further education is study undertaken after completing compulsory education at the age of 16.

It covers qualifications at Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 6 and below such as standard grades, highers, intermediates and some access courses. It also covers advanced highers, vocational and leisure courses.

The college can tell you if a course is counted as further or higher education, full-time or part-time.

Further education does not include degrees or postgraduate level courses, HNDs, or HNCs.

Money to live on while studying

The money you have to live on will be a combination of a bursary from the college, benefits and earnings if you work at the same time.
Which of these and how much you get depends on your circumstances.
