Child Disability Payment

Last updated: 15/01/2021

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children will be transferred to the Scottish Government in 2021. Applications will begin next summer as part of a pilot, ahead of a full roll-out across the country from autumn 2021.

The benefit will remain much the same but with two main changes:

  • children can remain on child disability payment until aged 18 rather than the previous age limit of 16 for DLA. This will hopefully help ease the move from child to adult services.
  • the maximum amount will be given for children and young people who are terminally ill whatever their life expectancy.

Families of children with a disability or long term health condition living in Dundee City, Perth and Kinross and the Western Isles will be able to apply for Child Disability Payment from summer 2021. This new benefit should be available across Scotland from autumn 2021. We will update this page as more information becomes available. See Child Disability Pilot areas announced.
