Who gets free school meals?
All children in primary 1 to 5 can get free school lunches during term time, if they go to a school run by their local council or funded by the Scottish Government.
Your child could continue getting free school meals in primary 6 and primary 7 if you get:
- Universal Credit (where your monthly income is not higher than £850)
- Scottish Child Payment
- Income Support
- income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance
- income-based Employment and Support Allowance
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
If your child is 16-18 years old and receives any of these benefits for themself, they can also claim free school meals.
If your child will get free school meals regardless of their age and your income if they go to a special school which is funded by the Scottish Government or run by their local council.
What about during the holidays?
If your child gets free school meals, you might be able to get support over the holidays, too. You’re likely to be eligible if you receive any of the following:
- Universal Credit (as long as your monthly earnings are £850 or less)
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
You can apply as soon as you start getting any of these benefits—even if it’s during the school holidays. There’s no need to wait until term time begins again.
Help is available for these school breaks:
- Easter 2025
- Summer 2025
- October mid-term 2025
- Christmas 2025

If this could make things a little easier for your family, don’t hesitate to apply. You’re not alone—and support is here when you need it.
How can I apply?
