Where will I live after separating?
Last updated: 19/06/2025
Where you are going to live after you separate from your partner is likely to be one of the main things you’ll have to consider. Find out more about moving elsewhere.
Renting Your Home
You’ll need to decide if you want to stay in your home or move out. If you stay, make sure your landlord is okay with it and you can afford the rent on your own.
You and your ex might both decide to move out, or the matter could go to court to determine which of you stays in the house.
Help with Rent
Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for Universal Credit to help cover your rent and Council Tax. You could also qualify for a Council Tax Reduction.
Talk to your landlord to discuss your options.

If your home is owned
If you and your ex are both named on the deeds of the house, or if you’re married or in a civil partnership, you both have rights to the home and may be entitled to a share of it.
You have a few options:
- one partner could buy the other out
- the house could be sold, and any profit (or debt) split between both of you
- one partner could gift their share to the other
These choices need careful thought, and it’s a good idea to get advice from a solicitor. There might be factors you haven’t considered that could impact how you divide the property.
If you and your ex aren’t married or in a civil partnership, and only one of you is on the deeds, the person named typically has a claim to the home.
It’s best to get legal advice to be sure.
