Chris Chittick, OPFS Head of Policy, Strategy and Communications said:

“Following today’s announcement by Ofgem that the energy price cap is set to rise by 13% in July, we are deeply concerned that single parent families will be one of the groups hit hardest by increased costs.

“As sole earners, single parents face a higher burden in covering the cost of essentials such as housing, energy and childcare while also juggling caring responsibilities. At One Parent Families Scotland, support with energy arrears is already one of the most frequent issues raised by the families we support.

“No family should be forced into debt to be able to afford basic necessities such as heating and lighting. No child should have to grow up in a cold home.

“However, change is possible. We support Citizens Advice Scotland’s call for Ofgem to deliver a debt relief scheme and enhanced protections for households with unavoidably high usage and/or low incomes. This can be done by introducing a social tariff for energy where discounts are offered for households in such circumstances to ensure affordability.

“The need for heating and lighting is not a choice, and it should not be a luxury.”
