Sign our open letter: demand a child maintenance system that’s better for everyone

Last updated: 27/10/2025

It’s time for a child maintenance system that delivers for every child.

There would be a better quality of life for my children if there were two parents paying rather than it just being down to one parent. I feel bad because my son is like, ‘all my friends have got that’. I have to say ‘but they’ve got a mum and dad at home. I’m on my own and I’ve only got what money is mine'.

Right now, too many children are missing out on the support they’re owed.
The current child maintenance system is complicated, inconsistent and often fails the families who rely on it most.

Together, One Parent Families Scotland, Fife Gingerbread and IPPR Scotland have set out a clear plan to change that — a plan that would make the system fairer, safer and easier for all separated families.

Read our full report, Better for Everyone: a new vision for child maintenance, to see the evidence and recommendations behind our call for change.

Our proposals would:

  • Transform the CMS so it works for every family, not just as a last resort.

  • Improve support outside the CMS, so parents can get the right help at the right time.

  • Make the child maintenance formula fair and up to date, reflecting real living costs.

  • Make the social security system work better for separated families, recognising that child maintenance alone cannot alone is not a reliable anti-poverty tool.

We know what needs to change — now we need action. Add your name to our open letter to the Prime Minister and call for a child maintenance system that delivers for all children in separated families.

Our target is 1,500 signatures, so far we have 449, please sign today.

Covering your tracks

You may not want other people to know that you’ve been searching for information or help from OPFS.

When browsing the internet whether on a mobile phone, tablet or computer, you leave a ‘history’ trail of pages and sites you’ve visited.

It’s impossible to completely avoid being tracked online but if you’re worried about someone knowing which sites you’ve been looking at, there are some things you can do to help cover your tracks.

If you’re using a laptop or desktop computer, try keeping another document or website open in a new tab or window while browsing. If someone comes in the room and you don’t want them to see what you’re looking at, you can quickly switch to another window or tab.

Deleting browsing history

You can delete the history of websites you’ve visited, but it’s important to know that if you delete your browsing history, someone else using the same device may notice.

If you share a tablet, mobile phone, laptop or computer with someone, they might notice that passwords or website addresses have disappeared from their history.
