More and more children and their families are being pushed into poverty by the UK government’s cut to universal credit, benefit cap , 2 child policy and benefit conditionality which continue to have a devastating impact. One in four of Scotland’s children are officially recognised as living in poverty and there is still much work to be done to unlock children in Scotland from poverty. The announcement that the doubling of the SCP will happen next year is a gamechanger - more than 100,000 children under the age of six will benefit from the payments. Tackling poverty is good for society and the right thing to do. It enables children take advantage of all the opportunities available to them, and there can be no greater priority than ensuring all our children grow up in families with the resources needed to give them the best possible start in life.
