Annual Report & accounts for 2020/21

One Parent Families Scotland works to enable single parent families achieve their potential, to reach a decent standard of living and contribute to Scottish society.

Our thanks go to many incredible single parents across Scotland, our co-producers and experts, who continually inspire us, as they face daily challenges, putting the needs of their children first. Thank you for trusting OPFS to be able to give single parents a voice.

2020/21 was another very busy year at OPFS with a number of significant developments.

The pandemic exacerbated already difficult circumstances for single parents and their families. It  challenged us to re-evaluate and adapt our approach to service delivery.

Many of the challenges that arose related to parents navigating sole care responsibilities during the pandemic.

During the periods of coronavirus restrictions, as the primary, and often only, source of support for many single parents, OPFS saw a huge increase in parents reporting concerns and facing emergencies around food, fuel and mental health with coronavirus restrictions.

It was crucial that we reached out to single parent families to offer ongoing support and reassurance.

We moved quickly at the start of the pandemic to adapt our services to add remote and digitally based models. This ensured continuity of our services and supported our staff to be able to respond to new demands created by the lockdown measures, for example providing food, fuel cards, IT equipment as well as family well-being support.

As an organisation we responded quickly to new challenges, including a lack of accessibility to online and digital-based services for some single parents. By securing, through both donations and funding, over 2,000 tablets and mobile routers with data sims were distributed to families in need to enable them to continue their children’s education and reduce their isolation.
